In 1984 when this painting was made of square Plein 44 in Nijmegen, the telephone booth was still in full use. Although the bus is shown as a trolley bus, it had disappeared from the cityscape of Nijmegen for years.

In 1984 there were illuminated clockworks on the streets of Nijmegen. It is ten minutes to twelve, the man is running down the street to get to a birthday ‘on time’.

The building in the middle of the painting was In the early 1980s, my studio. With three fellow art school students, we moved into the top floor of this building. Later the building was demolished for dull residential buildings.
